LGBT Couple of the Week

Jen and Dawn

LGBTUSA is proud to present Jen and Dawn as the LGBT couple of the week. Here is their love story!

How long have you been a couple? 3 ½ years

How long have you known each other? 4 years

How did you meet? We met when I took a part time job where Jen was working

Who pursued who? Dawn totally pursued Jen and then Jen decided Dawn was right!

Are you dating, engaged, or partners? We are currently partners but have exchanged rings

What is the craziest place you "you know"? It would either be... while driving up a curvy mountain road or on top of rolls of bubble wrap on the floor

Who is more skilled at "you know" (if you don't agree, just say we don't agree)? We agree that neither can complain and we both do a pretty damn good job

Who wants to "you know" more often? Jen says that Dawn would be the one that always wants sex more often

How often do you "you know" (any form of "you know" - don't get too hung up on details)? For the 1st year it was several times a day, everyday... now it has slowed down a little because of busy schedules... so we would calculate at least 4 or 5 times a week.

What do you and your partner have the most fun doing, besides "you know"? We have the most fun going to different theme parks and riding back-to-back roller coasters and screaming together! And of course, there may be some "you know" involved on the coasters! We also love spending time with our little Boston terrier "Dixie." Some of the other things we enjoy is going on road trips and seeing new places that are right around us. Dawn loves to go fishing and be out in the country and Jen loves to stay in the city and loves going to the beach. So we always enjoy sharing the different things that we love. We like to look up strange attractions online and go check it out. Like that time we went to Alabama and found the toilet racing. We absolutely love hanging out with our friends but we don't pass up a chance to lounge around with each other and watch movies or play our Nintendo Wii.

Tell us a little about you.
Jen: I am very quiet but can totally get loud when need be. I tend to speak my mind too loudly in large crowds because I am not too good around people and am somewhat antisocial, and Dawn has to remind me to be patient and lower my voice before she has to fight someone but I don't listen to her. I like to laugh at a lot pretty much everything, sometimes when it’s not funny to other people, but I don't care. But I am friendly and talkative when I get to know someone. I currently work in mall management at a local mall and I love doing it... right now, its not what I would like as a career.
Dawn: Well... lets see. I tend to think a lot about strange things and I tend to have a lot of strange looks on my face. I am a little OCD and have to be organized at all times. Okay, Jen says "a lot OCD." I love to do stupid and silly things to make Jen laugh but you will never catch me doing these things around other people. I like to be macho and be out in the woods and go fishing and stuff like that but what most people don't know is that I will spend an hour in the bathroom on my makeup and hair and clothes. I like to make up new words and new ways to say old words. It makes Jen laugh. I am a therapist by career. I am the only person in my entire extended family to go to college after high school and the only one in my family to really move away from my hometown. I am very, very, country and some might call me a "redneck" which I don't mind. I have worked very hard my whole life and grew up working on a farm. During my career I have worked with severe emotionally disabled children and abused children. I have been an investigator with the state for child abuse cases and I also worked in Singapore and Malaysia for a while doing counseling. Right now I am the social services director at a long term care facility and I work with the different behaviors and moods of the elderly and dementia. I could say tons about that, but I will leave it at that!

What is your favorite song or movie and why?
Jen: I am totally addicted to music so I could never name just one. My current favorite CD is Lady GaGa, but that is subject to change in at least a week. My all time favorite movie would be The Wizard of Oz, which Dawn has never seen and has to have lived in a hole for the past 30 years...
Dawn: I listen to lots of different kinds of music but my favorite person in the world, besides Jen and mama, is Dolly Parton. Movies... I like "The other sister," and "Silence and the Lambs" and of course "Lord of the Rings."

What made you know you were "in love" with your partner?
Jen: I had known Dawn for about 6 months and one day I was sitting in her car and she was going to show me a "trick." She pulled out this little gun shaped lighter and said she was going to light my leg on fire without burning me. By the way, any of you that know Dawn, wouldn't find this strange. She didn't burn me and I with her being that close to me with fire was kind of sexy. But she kept me safe even with something dangerous. Yes, it’s a little strange... but so is Dawn.
Dawn: I had gone through most of my life trying to imagine the future. I would close my eyes and try to imagine what it would look like. I would see many things but nothing that really satisfied me. On day, after meeting Jen, I had gone back to my hometown and I was walking out through the woods with my dog. I closed my eyes to imagine my future and it was then that I saw Jen's face.... and I knew.......

What do you love or admire now about your partner?
Jen: I love the cute little expressions that come across her face and how she has helped me become more confident and not to take crap from other people, especially my mother. I admire how she encourages me to make my own decisions and speak for myself even if she doesn't agree with the decisions. I love how hard she works so that I can have the things I want and how she gives me everything she has and is saving for our future.
Dawn: I love everything she does. I love it when she is mad and the moods she gets into. I try not to laugh or grin when she is angry but it’s cute. I love it when she loves me! I love her imperfections and her faults. I love it when she realizes that she is wrong... or worse, when she is right!

What would you prefer that your partner change?
Jen: Well, she has a really hot temper sometimes when she hasn't eaten or thinks someone is really been stupid, or has forget to take her diabetic meds but she doesn't direct it towards me and has learned how to control it but I totally love her anyway!
Dawn: Sometimes she gets wrapped up in the computer or TV and I could say something like 40 times and she still hasn't heard a word I am saying... but that’s cute too!

What have you learned from your partner or how has your partner helped you grow?
Jen: Dawn has taught me how to be my own person and to think for myself. Most of the time I tend to go with the flow and not speak up about how I feel but Dawn has helped encourage me to speak up and put in my thoughts, even though sometimes I think she wished she had kept her mouth shut. I grew up in West Palm Beach as an only child. My mom was my friend and still wants to be my best friend and make my decisions for me. She doesn't agree with me being with Dawn but lately I have been encouraged to tell her what I think and become more independent from her. Dawn encourages me to do it nicely but it doesn't always come out that way!
Dawn: I have learned that I can be myself around her and that I don't have to be on guard all of the time. She has helped me grow and she has put me in my place so to speak because she isn't afraid to stand up to me and most other people are. She can tell when I get into my "counseling mode" and she reminds me that she is not one of my clients!

What is the nicest thing your partner has ever done for you?
Jen: Sometimes there are simple things like when she put rose petals all over the floor and the bed and when I got home it was a nice surprise. And then she had asked me once what was some of the things that I had always wanted to do in life. I told her some things but one of them was to swim with dolphins, because they are my favorite! So Dawn booked us a trip last year to Honduras and Belize and when we got to Honduras we went to this little deserted jungle island. There was a beautiful dock overlooking the water and these little grass huts over the water that you could sleep in for the night. The water was so clear it was almost like glass. Dawn had arranged for us to swim with the dolphins. This was huge since Dawn is scared of anything that moves in the water. She says she doesn't like "sea creatures." Anyway, she also got in the water with me so that we could experience it together and we were able to hug and kiss the dolphin "Anthony." He was so cute and he did tricks for us and it was absolutely amazing to have such a beautiful dolphin swimming by us in the water, although I think Dawn was on high alert most of the time!

Dawn:
She rented a huge log home for my 30th birthday and got all of our friends to join us. I tend to like the little things she does like make me little cards and leave them for me. I like that the best.

What is your nickname for your partner?
Jen: I call her "squooshy," not to be confused with "squishy."
Dawn: Peaches!

What do you hope you and your partner will do together in the future?
Jen: I hope for us to be living in a nice home with our dogs, because we will get more, and a cat that I will get. And we will have a pool in the backyard with a nice deck. I want to travel and see more places and maybe have a kid or two one day.
Dawn: I hope we live a long and happy life together traveling to new places and experiencing life together. I just want a happy and healthy family.
